The Hut at Cape Royds

was a painted paper installation constructed for the Satellite Art Fair in Miami for AWOL's entry during the Miami/Basel Art Week, November 2016. This immersive show simulated the wood cabin interior of a Antarctic supply hut occupied by Sir Ernest Shackleton's adventure team during his 1907-1909 expedition to claim the south pole for England.

Ongoing performances mocked the experience of being in a distant and cold satellite of civilization -or an artist in a remote studio space. The bathroom featured an operating video-periscope, created by Mehran Ayati, to remotely to view the main room performances alternately. This work provided fantasy and criticism of the role of the contemporary artist, as an explorer who pushes boundaries and territory, yet may be an unwitting colonist, and oblivious of impact on preexisting lands and culture.
